Balfour Services Club, Rosh Hashanah, London, 1943

A group of Jewish service members of the British armed forces converse in a hallway of the Balfour Service Club in London. They are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. According to the original caption, many soldiers in attendence met and connected unexpectedly with old friends. Just above, the Union flag hangs alongside the Zionist flag of the Yishuv in Eretz Yisrael. The year is 1943.

200,000 people, including 30,000 tourists, marched in today's annual pride parade in Tel Aviv. I can't think of a better example of a true oasis in the Middle East.

In Our Own Hands

Today on Yom Hashoah, we resolve to never again leave our fate in the hands of others and to always stand up against baseless hatred.
Here in these photos, members of the Jewish Brigade, a regiment of volunteers from Eretz Yisrael in the British army, join refugee children and loved ones in 1944-1945.
In the immediate aftermath of the war, brigade members facilitated the escape of Holocaust survivors from Europe to the Land of Israel. Additional soldiers and officers remained in the continent to participate in retribution against former SS officials who had gone into hiding. Members of the brigade would go on to form the backbone of the IDF's initial officer corps upon its inception.

Anthropoid 2016

A new film based on Laurent Binet's masterful novel HHhH is currently in production. Binet's book is a meta-historical take on Operation Anthropoid, the 1942 assassination of SS General Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most daring events of the Second World War.

The last time this subject was adapted to the silver screen was 41 years ago with Operation: Daybreak. Let's just say, I couldn't be any more excited.
