Bastille Day 2014

It's hard to speak about today's Bastille Day celebrations in France without mentioning the hateful and violent display that occurred yesterday by "pro-Palestinian" protesters at the Place de la Bastille in Paris. A display that resulted in attacks against synagogues and innocent Jews. Mind you, this all occurred at the same historical location of the original Bastille. Thankfully though, the French republic is strong and robust, and most importantly, governed by the values of tolerance and enlightenment. I know that the overwhelming majority of Frenchmen and women find these actions entirely reprehensible. Nonetheless, on this Bastille Day, it seems like there's no better time to reflect and try to understand just how we've managed to reach this point.

French forces parade down the Champs Elysees in Paris.

The Eiffel Tower alight with fireworks.

French Air Force jets stream over the Louvre.
