Abraham Grossman Z"L

Abraham Grossman Z"L
1925 - 2020

Abraham Grossman was born in Güstrow in northeastern Germany in 1925. On the eve of the war he escaped to London with his brother on a kindertransport train. Grossman spent most of the war years in England and would go on to join the British Army's Jewish Brigade in 1944. He served in Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands - eventually returning as well to Germany as a soldier to be posted at Landsberg Prison in Bavaria. After meeting his wife in Europe, herself a German-born Jew, they sailed to Eretz Yisrael in 1947, settling in Kibbutz Yavneh. Grossman go on to serve with distinction and participate in the War of Independence as a fighter in the Haganah. He passed away from COVID-19 complications in Tel Aviv in October 2020 at the age of 95. May his memory be a blessing.

Modern Times

Tel Aviv beach one year after the State of Israel's independence.

I personally love this photo. There's a certain restlessness that's so visible and apparent. When I see her attire and the heavy coat she's wearing, which is not exactly suitable for lounging at the beach, it reminds me how so many new Israelis, my family included, had left Europe to return to our homeland yet nonetheless often felt alien and out of place in the Levant. This photo was also used on the cover of Linda Grant's novel When We Lived in Modern Times.
